Windows95 Dialup Instructions
The following instructions are for those who DO NOT have our software. These pages will explain how to connect to ISOT using Dial-Up Networking in Windows 95 if you wish to configure the connection manually.  Although not recommended, this method can also be used for windows 98.

The assumptions that we make are as follows:

  • You are working in Window 95
  • You did not obtain our automated ISOT Configurator software
  • You have installed 'Dial-Up Networking' from your installation diskettes or CD (usually is, by default)
  • You have a working modem installed on your computer
  • You have the Windows 95 installation diskettes or CD handy
  • You have an active account with ISOT and know your login ID and password

Step1: Configuration of the Dialup Protocols

First we need to make sure you have the correct components installed to connect to ISOT.
  1. From the Windows 95 desktop, double-click on the 'My Computer' icon.
  2. Double-click on the 'Control Panel' icon.
  3. In the 'Control Panel' window find the 'Network' icon and double-click on it
  4. You should now be in the 'Network' window. You should have a Dialup Adapter and a TCP/IP listed under the installed components box under the Configuration tab. The TCP/IP can be listed as TCP/IP --> Dialup Adapter or by itself. If you have an ethernet card installed you will have a TCP/IP for that also but this does not affect your dialup with us. Just make sure you have ONLY one TCP/IP for the Dialup Adapter. If you don't see those components, then continue below. If you do have them installed, click cancel and skip to Step #2.

  5. From the Network window click the 'Add' button.
  6. Click Adapter then click the 'Add' button.
  7. Select 'Microsoft' from the Manufacturer heading (left side) and 'Dial-Up Adapter' from the Network Adapter heading (right side).
  8. Click on 'OK'

Windows 95 should have returned you to the Network window, and you should now be able to see the dial-up adapter that you have just loaded; you will also notice that Windows 95 automatically loaded some network clients and protocols.

This is just Windows 95 trying to be helpful, but the protocol that we need--called TCP/IP--isn't loaded, so we need to add another Network Component.

  1. Click on the 'Add' button again, but this time...
  2. Select 'Protocol' and click on the 'Add' button
  3. Select 'Microsoft' from the list of Manufacturers and then 'TCP/IP' from the list of Network Protocols.
  4. Click on the 'OK' button.

You should be back in the 'Network' window. Click OK and it will either ask you for your Windows95/98 CD and/or ask you to reboot the computer. Go ahead and reboot when asked. Once you are back in Windows, then proceed with Step #2.

NOTE: Most will not need to do these next steps but if you find you cannot connect properly then we need to modify the TCP/IP settings to be used with ISOT.

  1. From the Control Panel double click on the Network icon.
  2. Click once on the TCP/IP protocol, so that it is highlighted
  3. Click on the 'Properties' button
  4. Select the tab labeled 'DNS Configuration' at the top.
  5. Select the radio button labeled "Enable DNS"
  6. In the box for Host type in your username.
  7. In the Domain box type isot.com in lower case letters.
  8. In the box with the 3 dots under "DNS Server Search Order" you'll need to add the appropriate name servers for your location. They are:

In Fort Hood / Killeen Area

    Primary DNS: 66.187.80.3
    Secondary DNS: 66.187.80.4
  9. Enter your Primary DNS. Note: type each number in the appropriate space, using the supplied periods [.]
  10. Click on the 'Add' button
  11. Type in the Secondary DNS and click on the 'Add' button again.
  12. At the bottom in the empty box under 'Domain Suffix Search Order' type isot.com in lower case letters and click on the 'Add' button
  13. [FrontPage Save Results Component]

When finished, your 'DNS Configuration' under 'TCP/IP Properties' should look something like:

  14. Click on the WINS Configuration tab at the top and select the Disable WINS button.
  15. Click on 'OK', which should take you back into the 'Network' window.
  16. Now click once on Dial-Up Adapter, so that it is highlighted
  17. Click once on the 'Properties' button
  18. Select the tab labeled 'Bindings'
  19. Make sure that 'TCP/IP' is the only binding listed that has a check in the box next to it. This will look something like:
  20. Click on the 'OK' button to keep your changes
  21. Click the 'OK' button on the Network screen to finish up.

Windows 95 will now need to copy over some drivers for the TCP/IP protocol that you added, which will probably require the distribution diskettes or the original CD-ROM.

When Windows asks you if you'd like to restart your system, click "Yes" and wait for your computer to restart. When you're back to your desktop screen, continue to Step #2.

 Step2: Configuring Dial-Up Networking

Before we begin, we need to double-check that Dial-Up Networking is installed on your computer. Double-Click on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop. Look for an icon labeled 'Dial-Up Networking'. For most people, Dial-Up Networking will already be installed. If you see the icon, move on to the next step, Make New Connection. But if you did a "minimal install" for space reasons, Dial Up Networking might not be installed. If it isn't there, you'll need to install Dial Up Networking from your installation disks/CD-ROM before going any farther. To do this,
  1. Double-click on 'My Computer'
  2. Double-click on 'Control Panel'
  3. Double-click on 'Add/Remove Programs'
  4. Select the tab marked 'Windows Setup'
  5. Click the check box next to "Communications"
  6. Select the button marked 'Details'
  7. Click on the check box next to 'Dial-Up Networking'
  8. Click 'OK' and your computer will copy a few files. You may need to insert your Windows 95 installation disks or CD-ROM.
  9. If Windows asks you if you'd like to restart your system, click "Yes" and wait for your computer to restart. When you're back to the desktop screen, continue to Make New Connection.

 Step3: Make New Connection

  1. From the default Window 95 desktop double-click on the 'My Computer' icon, then double-click on the 'Dial-up Networking' icon
  2. Double-click the 'Make New Connection' icon
  3. Type "ISOT" in place of My Connection.
  4. Click 'Next' button.
  5. Enter your ISOT dialup number into this screen. The numbers are:
In Killeen / Fort Hood Area:
    ISDN (115k) 254-220-4004
    56k / v.90 / v.34 - 254-220-4004
    VPN / Multilink (MPPP) 254-220-4004

    In Belton / Temple Area:

    ISDN (128k) 254-231-4027
    56k / v.34 / v.90 - 254-231-4027
    VPN / Multilink - 254-231-4027

  6. Click the 'Next' button then click 'Finish'.

You should see a new ISOT icon in the 'Dial-Up Networking' box.

  3. Choose the 'Enable software compression' option
  4. At the bottom, select only TCP/IP as your Network protocol
  5. Click on the 'TCP/IP Settings'button
  6. Click on the 'Server assigned IP address' in the top section In the second section click 'Server Assigned name server addresses
  7. Skip the WINS server boxes. Make sure both the boxes are checked at the bottom for 'Use default Gateway' and 'Use IP header compression'
  8. Click on the 'OK' and click OK again which should bring you back to the Dialup Networking box.
  9. Right-click on the ISOT icon.
  10. Select 'Create Shortcut. When the message box pops up telling you cannot create a shortcut here, do you wish to place it on the desktop, click Yes.

 Step4: Dial into ISOT

  1. Double-click on the new 'Shortcut to ISOT' icon on your desktop.
  2. Enter your login ID and password (NOTE: make sure that you type both your login ID and password in lower case letters).
  3. Click on the 'Connect' button
  4. You will hear the modems 'talking' then you will see the brief message "Verifying user name and password" as Windows 95 establishes your connection. And then a final little screen will pop up on your screen...
